Getting deeper into Indonesia’s rich historical heritage, many values are expressed through sculptural inscriptions—large stones featuring intricate patterns, carved handwriting, and symbolic elements. While some inscriptions are in Sanskrit, many remain undeciphered to this day.

The craftsmanship involved in creating these inscriptions symbolize the values of patience and balance. Without these virtues, the inscriptions would not have achieved the timeless beauty we now admire. As the years pass, these carvings erode, leaving behind beautifully embossed patterns on the stone surfaces.

Several inscriptions have been found near rivers or water-based areas, such as the Pasir Awi inscription, discovered in Bogor, Indonesia. In 1864, Dutch archaeologist N.W. Hoepermans first uncovered this historic artifact.

To honor these ancient inscriptions, Studio Hendro Hadinata along with Floorstudio designed rugs inspired by the embossed patterns of Pasir Awi.

Rather than replicating the exact design, we created new patterns that preserve the essence of the original. The rug’s overall look is influenced by the pebbles found around the Pasir Awi site, which have been naturally stacked and smoothed over time, forming harmonious, oval shapes. Much like Indonesia’s inscriptions, these pebbles reflect the patience and transformation that come with the passage of time.

After years of mutual respect and friendship, Studio Hendro Hadinata and Floorstudio have finally reached the perfect moment to collaborate.

Our partnership began with the exhibition of a single artistic rug at IFFINA 2024 (ICE BSD, Tangerang). The response was overwhelming; visitors were captivated by how a rug could transcend its traditional role as a floor covering to become a piece of functional art.

As product designers, our studio is driven by a constant curiosity for new materials. We strive to enhance their natural properties and push them toward new frontiers—creating designs that are fresh in aesthetic, innovative in appearance, and advanced in their utility.

MADANA Tiles was founded by a group of friends with passion in creating an everlasting architectural product, and is the first cement tiles company in Surabaya, Indonesia. Our company offers heritage artisan tiles for your home and projects, to give it an authentic and wonderful ambient.

Due to the production processes that are completely handmade, MADANA Tiles assured authenticity and uniqueness. With the production process being supervised on a regular basis, allows us to control the whole process with guaran-tees the best result and competitive price.
