During Indonesia Design Week 2025 (September 12–20), held at the Indonesia Design District (IDD) PIK2, our studio debuted a landmark collaboration with the American Hardwood Export Council (AHEC)—the leading international trade association representing the American hardwood industry.

This partnership sought to bridge different backgrounds, resources, and geographies. We explored a central question: How can an Indonesian designer, deeply rooted in Asian timber traditions and local culture, reimagine the potential of American solid wood?

This inquiry led to a deep design development process. Studio Hendro Hadinata explored the unique characteristics of American Red Oak and Cherry, integrating these species into a collection that honors both the material’s origin and Indonesian design sensibilities.

Developed over several months in collaboration with Omega Mas, a specialized manufacturer in East Java, the collection is titled “Karana.” The name is derived from Tri Hita Karana—the Balinese philosophy of triple harmony and balance.

In today’s fast-paced design culture, where meeting deadlines and launching new products dominate the conversation, there’s little room to consider what happens to excess materials. “JEJAK” is a reflection on this very issue—a response to our collective tendency to prioritize the new while neglecting the past. It’s a reminder that sometimes, progress requires us to slow down.

“JEJAK” is a celebration of design thinking cycle, material honesty and artisan skill. It balances thoughtful design with a deep respect for process, showing that even the remnants can hold meaning. Through “JEJAK,” we invite others to see residue not as waste, but as potential.

This year, we are proud to take part in EMERGE Singapore, presenting another material exploration that our studio is always excited to pursue.

Named Jejak, this functional art piece becomes a striking focal point of the space, created in collaboration with the unexpected waste threads from @floorstudio.id

Redlining the identity of our ancestors and linking it to who we are today. Honoring and elevating the past. Bridging heritage with modernity.

We believe the most important aspect is to place a high value on traditional craftsmanship. By doing this, we create a connection between our ancestral heritage and our modern activities through contemporary design.

What do you value the most?

We proudly present Rambu Collection, born from a heartfelt effort to gain a deeper understanding of our ancestors in Sumba, Indonesia.

Our studio believes that by creating heritage-focused designs, we are not only enhancing the design itself but also the landscape of traditional culture. At the heart of it all is a return to our roots, to what our ancestors accomplished in the past.

Through design, we want to give people the chance to fall in love again with the rich culture of Indonesia.

Behold Rambu Collection, born from a harmonious collaboration between @studio_hendro_hadinata and the hands of Sumbanese artisans. Weaving together the essence of local culture.

Its gentle curves, like river pebbles shaped by time, are a memory of our first steps on Sumba’s shores. Etched with embossed symbols of the earth elements. These forms whisper nature’s stories, inviting all to embrace the quiet beauty of this singular, monomaterial piece.

“Material of Interest” represents our studio’s commitment to design through the lens of material processes. It highlights the research and experimentation that define our practice. We will be exhibiting several final outputs from our material explorations, including:

Our journey of Equipoise began with a genuine curiosity about the impact of recycled materials on environmental issues. We embarked on a project in Bali while simultaneously exploring opportunities to collaborate with local artisans specializing in recycled glass craftsmanship. We created Equipoise as a way to highlight the fragility yet sustains material from the locals.

Developing relationships with local crafters is crucial in order to gain a comprehensive understanding of their challenges and doing collaboration. Through this participatory design approach, we actively engage with crafters, seeking their insights to identify issues and jointly explore innovative solutions that align with our shared vision.

Why is it meaningful for a designer to create from waste?

In the world of recycled glass, few items are truly elevated into high-value objects. We recognized the potential in the small-scale items currently produced by Balinese crafters—plates, cups, and mini aquariums. While these items have gained a solid reputation, a lack of new design has led to a saturated market where everyone produces the same work, making it difficult for individual crafters to compete.

Beyond the economic struggle, there is a hidden environmental cost. The Balinese crafters explained that to produce these small items, their kilns must remain on continuously for weeks to reach and maintain the necessary temperatures. This results in incredibly high energy consumption for a relatively low-value output.

We proposed a challenge to the crafters: What if we created larger, more significant pieces? By shifting from small trinkets to substantial furniture, the kiln can be used more effectively, producing high-value objects in less time and reducing overall energy consumption.

The result of this conversation is Equipoise Side Table—a fusion of resourcefulness, energy efficiency, and contemporary design.

During our debut exhibition at EMERGE, Singapore, we proudly showcased two distinct collections.

The first, Bloom Coffee Table, a collaborative effort with CARIA Design, features a unique round table adorned with CARIA’s exquisite Jumputan sheets. Additionally, we presented the Uni Side Table and Undan Coffee Table, crafted using Sumbanese metal weaving—a cherished heritage from Sumba that persists through generations.

This year, Studio Hendro Hadinata is proud to participate in the world-renowned SaloneSatellite during Salone del Mobile.Milano.

Staying true to our mission of bringing Indonesian craftsmanship to the global stage, the studio has collaborated with local artisans to present a series of products that highlight traditional handmade techniques and material innovation:

1. The Gambo HPL Project (In Collaboration with @caria.design)
   This project utilizes “Jumputan”—a traditional tie-dye technique from Musi Banyuasin. We worked with local Ibu-Ibu (artisans) who create these intricate fabrics using natural dyes derived from the Gambo Muba fruit.

We have transformed these textiles into specialized HPL (High-Pressure Laminate) sheets. This technique does more than just add aesthetic value to a modern material; it creates sustainable economic opportunities. By integrating traditional craft into industrial surfaces, every sale directly benefits the women of Musi Banyuasin, ensuring the craft’s survival through fair trade.

2. The Eve Lamp: A Modern Sumba Weave
   Working side-by-side with artisans from Sumba Island, we have developed a modern interpretation of traditional weaving. Replacing organic fibers with stainless steel wire, the crafters spin the metal into bulbous, layered structures that remain elastic and flexible.

We named this creation Eve Lamp. Its organic form evokes the “forbidden fruit” of the Garden of Eden—our interpretation of a deep, ancestral past. The lamp illuminates its surroundings using internal LED strips. Beyond interior use, Eve Lamp is designed as a portable safety “enabler” for cyclists or runners, ensuring visibility and safety at night.
