    I. Prologue – Story Behind the Project

Over the past few years, the principal of Studio Hendro Hadinata; Hendro Hadinata, has traveled to several regions in Indonesia to explore local emerging identities and cultural heritage. This journey began with Hendro’s belief that the future of design is rooted in traditional culture.

Personally engaging in meaningful conversations with local crafters, Hendro has gained insightful stories and identified design opportunities. This approach has enabled our studio to be grounded in the unique localities of Indonesia.

In 2023, we were chosen to be one of the designer collaborators for “CULTUKAR – Years of Culture,” an international cultural event initiated by Qatar Museum (M7).

The event was envisioned to collect a deeper understanding between the two countries on culture, environment, habit, and design topics. Together with Noora Al-Melhim, a product designer from Qatar, we explored one of the overlooked regions, yet full of golden heritage, Sumba. The exact location is Waingapu, located in the heart of East Sumba; which is more indigenous than other areas on the same island.

During our journey, we uncovered a fascinating revelation: East Sumba was once submerged beneath the ocean, leaving behind remnants of coral atop the land. Thus, every step taken on East Sumba’s terrain today is a walk through its oceanic past, a proof to its enduring history and remarkable transformation.

    II. About Mamuli

Beyond the picturesque coastal views and stunning landscapes, the true treasure of East Sumba lies in its craftsmanship.

From one home to another, locals engage in the art of crafting as a means of livelihood. These crafts represent a longstanding tradition of handcrafted metal jewelry production. Originally, this craft was employed in the creation of ‘Mamuli’—jewelry from a groom and his bride as a symbol of their committed relationship.

Mamuli comes in a variety of sizes, all crafted with the same technique usually from 1 cm until 40 cm in diameter. It makes them used to make details in small scale products. Started with a ply of metal sheets, they apply heat to soften them, rendering them pliable for manipulation. Skillfully bending and shaping the metal, they meticulously carve out and style the distinctive three-dimensional oval form, showcasing the artistry craftsmanship in Mamuli default creation.

The local artisans have extensive knowledge of the materials they work with, allowing them to optimize their techniques during the manufacturing process (heating, folding, and forging).

These deep explorations lead our studio to collaborate with local crafters from Sumba to create a series of products made with metal sheets.

We aim not only to explore shapes but also to consider how we can make them unique and extraordinary. After learning extensively from the locals, Hendro conceived the idea of using embossing, debossing, and stamping techniques. The thin and malleable characteristics of the material enable us to achieve tactile effects. The outcome resulted in the formation of a three-dimensional pattern that is both visible and tangible.

Throughout 2023, Studio Hendro Hadinata highlights the material and technique exploration of metal weaving originally done by crafters in Sumba, Indonesia. Our curiosity led to learning new things through explorative design thinking, resulting in the creation of objects with these new goods.

Our Bryo Pendant Lamp evokes a connection back to the warmest place of life. Its light source is wrapped in a metal mesh, radiating warmth that spreads to every strand of the metal. The interaction between the light and the mesh imitates how a heart—a new life—is living in the womb, enlivening the sound of early life that cannot be remembered.

  • Studio Hendro Hadinata Selected as the Designer for CULTUKAR – Years of Culture 2023

Years of Culture is dedicated to uncovering and celebrating shared cultural heritage, including a society’s history, customs, identity, and values inherited from previous generations. These include the exploration of culinary practices, along with traditional narratives embedded in theatre, music, and literature. By spotlighting different practices, Years of Culture reveals the similarities and differences that connect us, promoting unity and pride in a collective legacy.

    Via Years of Culture.

Studio Hendro Hadinata was selected to collaborate with a Qatari designer in “CULTUKAR – Years of Culture,” an international event by Qatar Museum (M7) aimed at nurturing understanding between cultures.

Teaming with Noora Al-Melhim, we explored Sumba’s rich heritage, discovering a metal sheet technique used in crafting Mamuli jewelry.

Inspired by Sumbanese traditional architecture and boat shapes, we created TIANA. Working with local artisans, we employed forging and folding techniques to merge cultural heritage with contemporary design.

Tiana Bench was born from a deep appreciation for the traditional craftsmanship of Sumba, specifically the techniques used to create Mamuli—a sacred piece of jewelry gifted by a groom to his bride.

This ancient technique is remarkably intricate and unique; each artisan is trained to master the minute details that define these ornaments.

We have transformed these delicate jewelry-making skills into a large-scale functional piece. By applying the mathematical precision of their craft, we created a structural pattern strong enough to support the bench’s form. In essence, the Tiana Bench serves as ‘jewelry for the home.

NUR serves as an artistic creation and installation in response to the issue of environmental degradation, particularly concerning Indonesia’s endemic fauna, aiming to raise awareness. It embodies three endangered animals portrayed with cleverly designed characters, giving a sense of closeness, especially among children.

These mammals include the Javanese Rhinoceros (Rhinoceros sondaicus), the Sumatran Tiger (Panthera tigris sondaica), and the Whale Shark (Rhincodon typus).

The challenge lies in crafting recognizable silhouettes in a minimalist style, true to the actual size of the animals, while imbuing each character with a sense of anxiety to effectively convey the message about their plight.

CILIUM takes its name from the ciliary muscle—the key structure in the eye that enables us to focus. Without this muscle, our vision would be static and blurred. We wouldn’t be able to shift focus, to adapt.

At Studio Hendro Hadinata, we believe that every design we create should proudly elevate local materials and coloring techniques—supporting Indonesia’s sustainability movement and design identity. CILIUM is handcrafted from cylindrical segments of natural rattan, its spherical form built through layered stacking and bound with wool threads.

These materials are intentionally composed to create a dual experience: from a distance, viewers can perceive the layered texture of the rattan—a “zoomed-out” view; up close, the intricate detailing of the wool threads reveals itself—a “zoomed-in” perspective within the store environment.

CILIUM is more than a form—it is a part of the “eye” that reflects a vision of design in Indonesia.

In this project, Studio Hendro Hadinata collaborates with Gondojules, a Jakarta-based interior architecture and design studio known for its work on restaurants, retail spaces, private homes, high-end apartments, and boutique hotels.

This opportunity is to create a holistic centerpiece for Project Soul, a handcrafted eyewear brand that offers premium quality at a fair price, aiming to empower individuals and give them the confidence to tell their stories proudly from Jakarta.
