Our journey of Equipoise began with a genuine curiosity about the impact of recycled materials on environmental issues. We embarked on a project in Bali while simultaneously exploring opportunities to collaborate with local artisans specializing in recycled glass craftsmanship. We created Equipoise as a way to highlight the fragility yet sustains material from the locals.
Developing relationships with local crafters is crucial in order to gain a comprehensive understanding of their challenges and doing collaboration. Through this participatory design approach, we actively engage with crafters, seeking their insights to identify issues and jointly explore innovative solutions that align with our shared vision.
Why is it meaningful for a designer to create from waste?
In the world of recycled glass, few items are truly elevated into high-value objects. We recognized the potential in the small-scale items currently produced by Balinese crafters—plates, cups, and mini aquariums. While these items have gained a solid reputation, a lack of new design has led to a saturated market where everyone produces the same work, making it difficult for individual crafters to compete.
Beyond the economic struggle, there is a hidden environmental cost. The Balinese crafters explained that to produce these small items, their kilns must remain on continuously for weeks to reach and maintain the necessary temperatures. This results in incredibly high energy consumption for a relatively low-value output.
We proposed a challenge to the crafters: What if we created larger, more significant pieces? By shifting from small trinkets to substantial furniture, the kiln can be used more effectively, producing high-value objects in less time and reducing overall energy consumption.
The result of this conversation is Equipoise Side Table—a fusion of resourcefulness, energy efficiency, and contemporary design.
