Pasir Awi Rugs

2024

Getting deeper into Indonesia’s rich historical heritage, many values are expressed through sculptural inscriptions—large stones featuring intricate patterns, carved handwriting, and symbolic elements. While some inscriptions are in Sanskrit, many remain undeciphered to this day.

The craftsmanship involved in creating these inscriptions symbolize the values of patience and balance. Without these virtues, the inscriptions would not have achieved the timeless beauty we now admire. As the years pass, these carvings erode, leaving behind beautifully embossed patterns on the stone surfaces.

Several inscriptions have been found near rivers or water-based areas, such as the Pasir Awi inscription, discovered in Bogor, Indonesia. In 1864, Dutch archaeologist N.W. Hoepermans first uncovered this historic artifact.

To honor these ancient inscriptions, Studio Hendro Hadinata along with Floorstudio designed rugs inspired by the embossed patterns of Pasir Awi. Rather than replicating the exact design, we created new patterns that preserve the essence of the original. The rug’s overall look is influenced by the pebbles found around the Pasir Awi site, which have been naturally stacked and smoothed over time, forming harmonious, oval shapes. Much like Indonesia’s inscriptions, these pebbles reflect the patience and transformation that come with the passage of time.
